According to a report, the Asia Cup is in trouble. India and Sri Lanka didn’t attend the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting in Dhaka on July 24 due to political issues in the host country.
India is scheduled to host the Asia Cup in September 2025 and has already shifted a tour to Bangladesh from August this year to September next year. The reason given was international commitments but political tension between New Delhi and Dhaka is a big reason too.
A senior Pakistani official with the ACC told Telecom Asia Sport that the meeting will go ahead as planned.
He said they gave all member countries two weeks to prepare. If a member doesn’t want to go to Dhaka, they can join online but the meeting will still be in Dhaka.
The ACC said Pakistan and Bangladesh are playing a T20I tri-series in Dhaka from July 20-24 so it makes sense to have the ACC meeting there. Also Bangladesh hasn’t hosted an ACC meeting in a while.
India is hosting the Asia Cup from September 5 but they will probably ask the ACC to move it to a neutral venue. This is because of an agreement that Pakistan won’t tour India, the report said.
The agreement was made earlier this year when India didn’t want to tour Pakistan for the Champions Trophy because their government didn’t allow them to cross the border. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) agreed to move India’s matches to Dubai if they also didn’t send their team to India for any big event until 2027.

ACC sources told www.telecomasia.net that the ACC has asked the BCCI if they want to host the event but is still waiting for a response.
Political tension between Pakistan and India has been a problem for the Asia Cup for long. In 1986, India boycotted the event because of bad relations with Sri Lanka and Pakistan didn’t go to the event hosted by India in 1990.
The last event in 2023 used a hybrid model with India playing their matches in Sri Lanka and the rest of the matches in Pakistan.
