Rishabh Pant will miss the fifth India-England Test at The Oval next week. He got injured on Day 1 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford.
BCCI announced on Sunday (July 27) that Pant won’t be available for the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy after the match in Manchester. Narayan Jagadeesan will replace him.
Jagadeesan, 29, the wicketkeeper-batter from Tamil Nadu, is joining the India Test team for the first time. He will reach England soon to join the squad before the fifth Test.
Ishan Kishan was BCCI’s first choice but he is currently dealing with an ankle injury.
Jagadeesan has played 52 first-class matches, scored 3373 runs with 10 centuries and 14 fifties. He will be competing with Dhruv Jurel for a spot in India’s playing XI at The Oval. In those 52 first-class matches, Jagadeesan has a batting average of 47.50.
In the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, he scored 674 runs in 8 matches for Tamil Nadu, averaging 56.16 with 2 hundreds and 5 fifties. Among wicketkeeper-batters, only Vidarbha’s Akshay Wadkar (722 runs at 45.12 in 10 matches) scored more runs than him.

In IPL, Jagadeesan has played 13 matches for Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. He scored 73 runs in 7 matches for CSK and 89 runs in 6 matches for KKR in IPL 2023.
In this India-England Test series, Pant scored 479 runs in 7 innings. He scored centuries (134 and 118) in the first match at Headingley in Leeds and 25 and 65 in the second Test at Edgbaston. In the first innings of the Lord’s Test, Pant scored 74 runs but was out for 9 in the second. He scored 54 runs from 75 balls in the first innings of the match in Manchester, despite his injury.
