After the draw at Manchester, Ravichandran Ashwin praised Shubman Gill’s captain’s innings. He suggested Gill should bring in a bowler who can take wickets in the 5th Test. Ashwin said while batting depth can help you avoid losing, it doesn’t win you Test matches.
Ashwin spoke on his YouTube channel, Ash ki Baat, after the draw at Manchester. Centuries from Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar helped India turn a 311 run deficit into a 114 run lead. India will go into the final Test at The Oval with a chance to level the series. On day 4, India was 0/2 after the first over. But Gill and KL Rahul added 188 runs. Gill got his 9th Test century.
Ashwin said before the series some people questioned Gill’s technique. He said Gill proved his skills with a great century. Ashwin also said Gill made a tactical mistake by bringing in Washington Sundar late but he is young and can learn from his mistakes.
Ashwin said Gill played well under pressure. Gill had a good series with 4 centuries including a 269 at Birmingham. He has scored 722 runs at 90.25.
Ashwin feels India’s tactics have been ordinary at times and they should add a specialist bowler. He told Gill to do that to win Test matches.
