Kapil Dev, the former captain, has come out in support of Anshul Kamboj, who was trolled after his debut at Old Trafford in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. Kamboj, who plays for Haryana and Chennai Super Kings, had a tough time and some were questioning his fitness due to a drop in speed.
Kapil says it’s too early to judge Kamboj. He thinks people shouldn’t rush to conclusions about the 24-year-old. Do you expect a debutant to get 10 wickets in the first match? Kapil told reporters. You have to look at his potential. If he has it, he will recover. Everyone is nervous in their first match. The result may not be perfect but I think he has the skill and that’s what matters.
Kamboj, with only 25 first-class matches, was rushed into the Indian Test team as a cover for the English tour after doing well for Haryana and India A. He wasn’t in the main squad but was brought in to replace the injured Akash Deep and made his debut in Manchester.
The team showed their faith in Kamboj by letting him open the bowling with Jasprit Bumrah. But the young player’s inexperience at the highest level was evident as the English batsmen Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley attacked his first spell. Kamboj later got Duckett for 94 but ended the innings with 1 for 89 from 18 overs, with an economy rate of 4.90.

As India struggled with their bowling and allowed 669, Kamboj was hardly used by captain Shubman Gill who mostly relied on spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar to get some control. It’s not clear if Kamboj will play in the fifth and final Test of the series which starts on July 31.
