Varun Aaron, the former Indian fast bowler, is backing captain Shubman Gill to play well on Day 3 of the fifth Test at The Oval. He thinks Gill can make a score that really changes the game.
Aaron said on JioHotstar that Gill’s run out in the first innings was unfortunate but he will want to make up for it as India try to build on their small lead against England. I don’t think he will go for any risky singles, Aaron said.
Gill was run out in the first innings after pushing the ball for a quick single that wasn’t there. Gus Atkinson threw the ball to the stumps and Gill was back with 21 runs from 35 balls.
Aaron said Gill has been in great form and has the right mindset throughout the series. He wants the Indian captain to keep playing how he has been. I hope he keeps playing as he has in this series. He has already broken records and can break Sunil Gavaskar’s record in this series, he said.
In this final Test at The Oval, Gill broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series. Gavaskar had scored 732 runs in a series against the West Indies in 1978-79. Gill has now scored 737 runs in nine innings, with four centuries. He is also the top scorer in the series. Gill is now 38 runs away from holding the record for most runs by an Indian in a Test series, which is also held by Gavaskar.
He could have reached that record in the first innings but was run out for 21. Gill has been India’s key player, showing skill and maturity in tough conditions.

Aaron thinks a big score from Gill will help India increase their lead and take control of the game. If he scores big, India can aim for a lead of over 300, which will really put them in charge, Aaron said.
The main thing is Gill’s batting and I think he knows he’s the key to India’s plans, he added.
In the match so far, England chose to bowl first and India scored 224. Karun Nair (57) and Washington Sundar (26) added 57 runs for the seventh wicket. Gus Atkinson (5 wickets) and Josh Tongue (3 wickets) were England’s best bowlers. In England’s innings, Crawley (64) and Ben Duckett (43) added 92 runs for the opening wicket. After they were out, India’s bowlers Krishna (4) and Siraj (4) caused a batting collapse. Harry Brook scored 53 but England were bowled out for 247, giving India a 23 run lead.
At the end of the day, India were 75/2, Jaiswal (51*) and Akash Deep (4*) not out. India lead by 52.
