Michael Vaughan, the old England captain, thinks Harry Brook should take over from Ben Stokes instead of Ollie Pope, who is the current second-in-command.
Brook, who bats in his own way, gave England hope in the current Test. He scored 111 off 98 balls and left his team 35 runs away from winning with four wickets left on the last day. Even though Root and Brook made tons, rain has pushed the game to Day 5.
Vaughan, who won 26 out of 51 Tests as captain, thinks while Ollie Pope is a great helper, Brook is the right choice to lead England when Stokes decides to quit.
To me, Harry Brook looks like he was born to lead, Vaughan said on the Test Match Special podcast. If Ben Stokes gets hurt in the future, can’t Pope stay as vice-captain while Harry Brook takes over as the leader?
Brook, who is from Yorkshire, was named England’s white-ball captain earlier this year. He won his first series against a weak West Indies team. Vaughan said why he likes Brook more than Pope.
I see Ollie Pope as a great vice-captain, someone who can help the captain with ideas. But sometimes, the best vice-captains don’t make the best captains.

He talked about when he was the captain of England. Marcus Trescothick was a great vice-captain for me, but you wouldn’t want to make him the captain.
Pope, 27, is leading England in a Test for the fifth time. He filled in before when Stokes was out with a hamstring injury last year. I don’t know much about what goes on in the dressing room, but I want the best leader for the England team. A good vice-captain isn’t always a good captain, Vaughan said.
On Monday, David Lloyd also agreed with Vaughan. Michael Vaughan said he would rather have Harry Brook as vice-captain, and I agree, Lloyd wrote. Brook is sure to be in the team and shows he can lead. He would do well under Stokes. The thing is, Ollie Pope’s place in the team is not safe. If you don’t count the runs he scored against Ireland and Zimbabwe, his performance isn’t great. His average in the fourth innings of a Test is 16.7, which isn’t good enough for a number three.
