Everyone knew Jasprit Bumrah would only play three of the five Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Tests in England. Before the series, Bumrah, coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill had all said it was to manage his playing time and prevent another major injury like the one in Australia. So, his absence from the fifth Test at the Oval wasn’t a surprise.
But the BCCI’s media update on August 31 saying Bumrah was released from the squad during the fifth Test raised questions. If it was just rest, why release him instead of having him share his experience from the sidelines? A recent report has some answers.
According to The Times of India, Bumrah has a knee injury. Thankfully it’s not too bad and won’t need surgery. The BCCI medical staff is waiting for his scan results, a BCCI source said. The report said the 31-year-old will now start rehab at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
India is doing well in London but Bumrah’s injury is a big blow. Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna have bowled well and overcome exhaustion to take 15 of 16 wickets in the first four days. India was struggling on day four, close to a defeat. But Siraj and Prasidh brought the team back and left England at 339/6 chasing 374. They need 35 runs with four wickets left on the final day.

If Bumrah is injured, it’s a big concern for India. They have no Tests for a while but T20 World Cup preparations start next month with the Asia Cup. The BCCI is definitely worried about their key bowler’s long term fitness, especially if this is his second major injury in a short time.
