Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian captain and ex BCCI president, is likely to contest for the CAB president’s post. As per India Today, Ganguly has said he will file his nomination before the CAB AGM. If he does, he will win uncontested.
This comes after his elder brother Snehasish Ganguly, the current CAB president, was disqualified due to the Lodha Committee’s tenure rules.
The dates for the CAB elections and AGM are out. The top council met in an emergency session on Tuesday. AGM is on September 20, 2025 and the last apex council meeting is on August 14, 2025.
Ganguly has a long history with CAB. He was CAB Secretary in 2015 and then became President in the same year replacing Jagmohan Dalmiya. He was President till 2019 and then became BCCI President from 2019 to 2022.
During his earlier stint as CAB President (2015-2019), Ganguly tried to revitalize Bengal cricket. He worked on upgrading facilities and player development programs. He emphasized on better facilities and expert coaching which helped Bengal do well in domestic events like Ranji Trophy.
As BCCI president, Ganguly launched several projects to strengthen Indian cricket and internationalise it. One major achievement was the construction of a modern National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. This academy will provide top class training facilities for young cricketers.

Ganguly also played a key role in the growth of women’s cricket by introducing the Women’s T20 Challenge. This provided a platform for female players to showcase their skills. Under his leadership, IPL got record breaking media rights deals. These deals fetched over Rs 48,000 crore for the 2023-2027 cycle. In 2022, Roger Binny, a member of the 1983 World Cup winning team, replaced Sourav Ganguly as BCCI president.
Popularly known as Dada, Sourav Ganguly is one of India’s most successful captains. Known as the Prince of Kolkata, Ganguly started his international career in 1992. He made his Test debut at Lord’s in 1996 and scored a century.
He played 113 Tests and 311 ODIs and scored over 18,500 runs in international cricket. He scored 38 centuries and 107 fifties across all formats. The stylish left hander and Sachin Tendulkar formed a strong opening partnership in ODIs.
With his experience at state and national level, Ganguly’s return to CAB will bring stability and guidance to Bengal cricket. If he is elected, he will lead and guide the association again.
