Being ranked sixth in the world, Sri Lanka will take part in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. It marks their return to the big stage after having missed the last edition in New Zealand. Co-hosting the event, the Islanders also carry the pride of playing before packed stadiums at home.
On September 30, in Guwahati, they kick off the campaign against India. It is a stiff challenge which could actually set the tone for what follows. At the heart of the journey shall be Chamari Athapaththu, one of the more explosive batters in the women’s game and the leading runscorer of the country. For the very first time, she shall be leading her side in a 50-over World Cup.
In March, the team toured New Zealand for a three-match ODI series, which they lost 2-0. In March the group had a chance to bounce back, thanks to a three-match tri-series at home versus India and South Africa. The team did fairly well by placing second in the series, with two wins in four matches played. Harshitha Samarawickrama topped the run charts for Sri Lanka with 203 runs in five matches at 40.60.

Rising star Dewmi Vihanga was undoubtedly one of the major protagonists of the series. She grabbed 11 wickets in just four matches, averaging an outstanding 18.81, and became the second highest wicket-taker in the tournament, while left-arm spinner Sugandika Kumari chipped in with crucial support by taking six wickets at an economy rate of 5.22.
In big wins, Kavisha Dilhari played a steady 62 in the middle order against South Africa, whereas Athapaththu herself turned the match on its head with three pivotal wickets against India. Then came the finishing touches to that unforgettable win: Nilakshika Silva went bonkers with 56* off 33 balls, securing one of the all-time glories for Sri Lanka in the recent past.
The team might be capable of springing a few surprises as an extremely strong dark horse at the World Cup but does not look in the deepest runs. Much will depend on Captain Athapaththu herself and the players that surround her.
Also, between June 2022 and August 2024, Athapaththu, Harshitha Samarawickrama, and Vishmi Gunaratne made up 47 per cent of the team’s total runs in 23 matches. Sri Lanka may be overly reliant on those players and, hence, new players need to come in to assist. If the bowling attack strengthens and the batters around Athapaththu do well on regular occasions, then Sri Lanka certainly has the opportunity to inflict distress on a few stronger teams.
Historically, Sri Lanka have not given the big teams much competition in women’s cricket. They have played India in 35 fixtures, winning only 4 against 31 losses while against Australia, they are 0-11, and have won merely one out of 20 fixtures against England. All this adds to the uphill task that awaits Sri Lanka to make deeper in the World Cup. While winning the overall title might remain elusive for now, the team has shown glimmers of resilience, giving the heavyweights a run for their money in the high-pressure tournament.
