Conditions had changed, but there had been no change for Shubman Gill and toss luck, with the Indian skipper again having lost yet another coin toss in Test cricket. This was the sixth straight time for Gill to take a toss loss, placing him in the company of another former Indian skipper, Kapil Dev. The India captain lost all five tosses in England, and this time around, Roston Chase called correctly to bat first against the West Indies.
Shubman Gill enters the unwanted list after yet another toss loss
After losing yet another toss, Gill entered into one of the unwanted lists, equalling New Zealand’s Tom Latham record of six lost tosses in a row at the start of his captaincy career. In fact, he goes one better than Kapil Dev, who lost five consecutive tosses since the start of his Test captaincy tenure in 1983.
New Zealander Ben Congdon holds the record for losing the maximum number of tosses consecutively; he lost seven coin tosses in a row. Gill is yet to break the toss hoodoo, and he will try breaking it up in the second Test match.

The year 2025 has turned out to be horrendous on the Indian side as far as the toss-taking ability was concerned. Prior to Asia Cup, India bad lost 15 tosses in sequence, which marked an unfortunate beginning with the England home series. After the conclusion of the fifth Test in England, the Men in Blue had lost 15 tosses in a row, imposingly creating an unwanted record for themselves. Their ill-luck with the tosses comprised two T20Is, eight ODIs, and five Test matches.
That curse was broken by Suryakumar Yadav when he called the toss correctly in the 2025 Asia Cup opener against UAE and opted to field first, making it India’s 16th correct call at toss.
