Kwena Maphaka, the fast bowler from South Africa who is just 19 years of age, is no longer able to participate in the Pakistan tour nor the single T20I match against Namibia. The athlete got a hamstring injury while doing a four-day domestic game for DP World Lions against Western Province.
The Names of the Two Players to Replace Kwena Maphaka are Ottneil Baartman and Lizaad Williams
The cricketer, who had been part of South Africa’s squad in the T20 World Cup 2024, has been added to the T20I squad for the series in Pakistan and Namibia. Lizaad Williams, on the other hand, has been included in the ODI squad for the Pakistan tour.
Kwena Maphaka will need to go through a four-week rehabilitation period after the scans showed a grade 1-2 injury. The young player has not experienced any major injury since making headlines during the U19 World Cup 2024 when he was the star performer.
In a surprising turn of events, the pacer managed to bowl 10 overs in the second innings despite being injured during his first spell with the ball. Immediately after the injury, he underwent scans which, fortunately, did not detect any serious issue, and thus Maphaka was able to return to the game. The scans after the match were not only to look for a problem but to declare him fit for the international tours and it was thought that he would be fit. Nevertheless, the injury seems to have worsened, and therefore the player will not be part of the crucial Pakistan series.
Kwena Maphaka’s Speedy Elevation in Global Cricket
Maphaka has been a constant feature in South Africa’s white-ball team since his first appearance in August 2024. His participation has been across the three formats and he has made a good impression during the recent tour of Australia. Moreover, he has been a part of the IPL teams Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals, which have led to him being regarded as one of the most promising young players in the so-called rainbow nation.
So, Maphaka would be wishing for quick recovery and no interruption whatsoever in his rapid advancement in South African cricket with the T20 World Cup just around the corner.
