It is very hard to find a team that has experienced more anguish than South Africa in ICC events. They had numerous moments of “so close but so far.”
To illustrate this, consider the 1999 World Cup semi-final. The exceptional form of the Proteas had raised hopes going into the semi-final. However, they were literally a run short of making it to the finale. That’s how unlucky they have been in the case of ICC events.
So, was South Africa able to win any ICC tournaments? The answer would be yes! And here we present the list of the ICC trophies that South Africa has won.
ICC Trophies Won By South Africa
1998 Champions Trophy
Most of you might not know that the Proteas have been one of the ICC white-ball tournament winners. And it was in 1998 when their saga of winning began with the marking of history.
The ICC decided to have a new 50-over tournament starting that year – the Champions Trophy. And the new tournament seemed to be a good omen for South Africa.

The Proteas reached the finals after routing the opponents in the quarter-final and semi-final matches. The final was against the West Indies, and the West Indies were put to bat first.
The Caribbean team made 245 runs. The total was not very big, hence South Africa was pretty confident of winning.
A combined batting performance saw the Proteas cross the 246-runs target, and with three overs to spare. And they took home their maiden ICC trophy.
2025 World Test Championship (WTC) Final
The journey of South Africa towards their second ICC title was a rocky one. Nevertheless, all their frustrations disappeared in the year 2025.
At the mid-point of the 2023-25 WTC cycle, South Africa was not even the first-choice team to claim the Test mace. But unlike many others, they turned the tables completely.
In the beginning, the Proteas won just one out of their five Tests. Then, a run of seven victories in a row took them all the way to the WTC final 2025.
The fight was only half done, though. Their main rival, Australia, was still left to face them in the final—and the Proteas knocked out the reigning champions in style.
At one point in the match, South Africa were trailing. They, however, made a stunning comeback and knocked off a target of 282 runs with five wickets remaining.
