The 2023 Cricket World Cup has been a rollercoaster ride, and we could now focus on the next, i.e. the 2027 Cricket World Cup. The 14th edition will have 14 teams competing for the trophy which is worth the trouble.
But before the main event, teams have to qualify for the World Cup first. The ICC has provided the 2027 Cricket World Cup qualification process as well.
Who are the World Cup 2027 Edition’s Hosts?
The 2027 Cricket World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. It is the second time that South Africa and Zimbabwe are holding the tournament together and this is the first time for Namibia.
How many teams will receive automatic qualifications?
10 teams will get the world’s places in line directly from the ICC ODI rankings. The tournament’s South African and Zimbabwean co-hosts along with 8 other top-ranked teams on the ICC Rankings will automatically be granted places. Namibia, though a co-host, will not have a direct spot but will rather take part in the CWC L2 (Cricket World Cup League 2).
What exactly is the Cricket World Cup League 2?
CWC L2 is basically an 8-team competition that includes the associate national members gaining ODI status. The event will be staged through a span of 3 years whereby every team will be playing a total of 36 ODI matches which will be divided into 9 triangular series.
The mentioned events will include not only Namibia but also the Netherlands, Nepal, Oman, Scotland, the USA, Canada, and the UAE.
The CWC L2’s top four teams will qualify for the World Cup-adjacent CWC Qualifier. The bottom four teams, however, will not necessarily be out of the flow since they will come forth in the CWC Qualifier Playoff where they will play alongside the 4 CWC Challenge League teams for a single spot in the CWC Qualifier.
What then, are the Challenge League and Qualifier Playoff?
The Challenge League is a 12-team tournament which is divided into 2 groups of 6 teams. Each group will conduct 3 round-robin tournaments in the next 3 years.
None of the teams playing in this league will have ODI status; hence, all tournaments between them will have List A status.
This third-tier List A competition will include the participation of Papua New Guinea, Jersey, Denmark, Hong Kong, Kenya, Qatar, Singapore, Uganda, Bahrain, Italy, Kuwait, and Tanzania.
Bahrain, Italy, Kuwait, and Tanzania each earned a place in the Challenge League after the playoff round and Bermuda, Vanuatu, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia were all part of the competition.
After that, the best 2 teams from every group of the Challenge League will join the Qualifier Playoff, where they will face the bottom 4 teams of CWC L2. The CWC Qualifier will then consist of the 4 best teams from the CWC Qualifier Playoff.
What is waiting for us in the CWC Qualifier?
The CWC Qualifier will be a tournament of 10 teams out of which 4 will be the ones to get tickets for the World Cup 2027. The two least ranked teams on the ICC Rankings (South Africa and Zimbabwe are not included in this regard) and the top 4 teams from the CWC L2 and Qualifier Playoff will be there as well.
The top 4 teams at the conclusion of the tournament will have their tickets to the World Cup stamped. The qualification process will end with the 14 teams booked for the main event.
