Jasprit Bumrah has made himself a name with his skilful fast bowling for India. But the pacer will be in the limelight when India tours Australia in November 2024.
Why? He may get a rare opportunity to lead India as a fast bowler in Australia after Kapil Dev.
As per some reports, Rohit Sharma might miss the first Test of the series due to personal reasons. So being the vice-captain of the team, Bumrah will have to fill in Sharma’s absence in the Perth Test.
But does Bumrah have captaincy experience? Well, let’s find out the pacer’s captaincy record across formats.
Jasprit Bumrah’s Captaincy Record
Jasprit Bumrah has been playing limited-overs cricket for India since 2016 and Test cricket since 2018. Since then, the right-arm fast bowler has been spearheading India’s pace attack, winning many matches single-handedly.
But Bumrah now has again got the opportunity to lead from the front, guiding the Men in Blue against Australia. However, it won’t be the first time that he will captain India in Test cricket.
Under Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy, India secured a commanding 295-run victory over Australia in the first Test at Perth Stadium on November 25, 2024. This win gave India a 1-0 lead in the five-match series

Jasprit Bumrah as Captain in Test Cricket
Jasprit Bumrah has been reinstated as the captain of the Indian cricket team for the New Year’s Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Bumrah, who previously led India to a dominant 295-run victory in the opening Test of the series, spoke highly of Rohit Sharma’s decision to rest himself for the match, calling it unselfish.

Thus far, Jasprit Bumrah has led India in only one Test match. His Test captaincy debut for India came against England on July 1, 2022.
The pacer took the charge in the fifth Test against England at Birmingham, which was originally scheduled for 2021. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Test was postponed to 2022.
Rohit Sharma was supposed to lead India in the rescheduled fifth Test, but he was unavailable due to Covid-19 infection. So Bumrah took the mantle in Sharma’s absence, becoming the first fast bowler after Kapil Dev to captain India in the Test format.
But, unfortunately, Bumrah couldn’t win the match as England defeated India by seven wickets. On the personal front, though, he had a memorable outing, as he smashed 35 runs in Stuart Broad’s over, creating a new record.

A year after his Test captaincy debut, Jasprit Bumrah made his T20I captaincy debut in August 2023. He led the Men in Blue in a three-match series against Ireland.
India’s then T20I captain Hardik Pandya was rested for the series, so Bumrah was given the responsibility of leading a young team.
Unlike his Test stint, Bumrah tasted success immediately, winning the first two matches of the series. The third T20I couldn’t take place due to rain, and India won the series 2-0.
Apart from Test and T20I cricket, Jasprit Bumrah hasn’t led India in the ODI format. Also, he has never captained teams in domestic cricket.
