The Indian Premier League (IPL) is witnessing its most remarkable performance at the moment in the form of 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Samastipur, Bihar. This young man has surely created an uproar by playing the 2025 IPL season for the Rajasthan Royals. He already has two matches under his belt, and in his third one, he created history by scoring a century in just 35 balls from the start. In fact, he is being readied to emerge as a standout performer of the season before one even knows it.
Young people of his age, most of the time, are found in schools. Juvenile Vaibhav, however, has done all of this under the bright lights of a stadium against some of the best bowlers. Many top players and supporters feel that he should already be representing the country because, according to all standards laid down, he is certainly going to shine very bright in Indian cricket. The catch: He can’t play internationally yet because ICC rules say players must be at least 15 years old.
Vaibhav’s birthday is on March 27, 2026, so he hasn’t reached the eligible mark yet. However, there is an exception that lets ICC entertain players and nations on ‘discretionary’ lines if the player shows enough prowess on-field and maturity off-field. If that case is put forth well by BCCI and agreed to by the ICC, he might well play international cricket before he turns 15.
To mention, the record of the youngest international player still stands with Pakistan’s Hasan Raza, who made his first appearance at the age of 14 years and 227 days. In India, this record belongs to Sachin Tendulkar, who made his debut at 16 years and 205 days. The national team is touring England in June, and discussions are rife about the possibility of including a 17-year-old player. Hence there is plenty of talk about Vaibhav’s prospects, especially if the ICC grants an exception.
