South Africa made history at Lord’s by beating Australia to win the WTC 2025 Final. This was a 27 year wait for an ICC title for the team led by Temba Bavuma. While South Africa were celebrating, it was a tough day for Australia. They are known for collecting trophies in the game’s history and lost a final after 15 years, which surprised a lot of cricket fans.
Like other teams, Australia will try to pick themselves up for the next WTC cycle. We might see some changes coming up and a few players may have just played their last games.
Mitchell Marsh
He has been a good batter, added a lot to the team. In the WTC 2023-25 cycle he scored 823 runs in 25 matches with an average of about 36. While those are decent numbers, we might not see him in Test cricket again.

Why might Mitchell Marsh not be picked again?
His form has gone down over time and he missed the last game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy because of this. He doesn’t seem to have the consistency for Test cricket anymore. Beau Webster was picked to replace him and his ability to bowl adds more options for the team which could make him a better choice.
Usman Khawaja
This is another player who might not make the next squad. He scored 1,428 runs in 39 innings in the last cycle which looks solid but inconsistency has been a problem. He hit a double century recently but hasn’t followed it up with strong performances so there’s uncertainty in the batting order. So Australia might try out some new players at the top.

Marnus Labuschagne
He came into the scene with a lot of promise but has struggled recently. In the WTC 2023-25 he scored 974 runs in 38 innings with an average of 27.82—way below what’s expected from him. His average hasn’t been over 40 since 2023 and this year it’s particularly low at 16.17 in four matches. He’s batting at number three and his lack of form is affecting the team’s performance so he might not make the cut moving forward. Instead Australia might look to bring in someone new to fill that gap.
