Shubman Gill has been titled the new Test captain of India, replacing former incumbent Rohit Sharma who recently retired. This decision occurred just before India’s five-Test series in England, set to commence on June 20. The change is a massive one-ever since since having marched forward, Abhishek Sharma, Gill’s childhood associate and compatriot through the 2018 U-19 World Cup title claim, opined.
Gill and Abhishek have a long track record of association that started right from the U-14 level for Punjab. Having scored the most runs for India throughout the U-19 championship journey, it is obvious that Abhishek is really proud of him.
Abhishek said to Star Sports, “When I look back to the early days of us playing for the Punjab teams of U-14 and U-16, it is an amazing sight to see him become the Test captain of India. I feel really proud about him.”
Abhishek is sure that Gill will lead the team well. He’ll handle his role great. I believe he’ll do well both as a player and a leader for India. Rishabh Pant joined Gill in his vice-captaincy.
Gill thus became one of the youngest Test captains for India with a 32-Test career where he has made 1,893 runs including five centuries. But, in overseas conditions, he has a record of 649 runs at an average of 29.50, plus one solitary century.
