Ahmed Raza, the former UAE captain and spinner, will be the head coach of the DP World ILT20 champions, Dubai Capitals. He will coach them in the Global Super League invitational tournament which starts this Thursday in Guyana.
Raza, 36, started coaching after he stopped playing in 2023. He was part of the Capitals’ technical staff when they won their first ILT20 title in February. Having retired from playing at 34, Ahmed Raza is focused on coaching. He is the head coach of the UAE women’s national team. Over the last two seasons he has gained experience with Dubai Capitals and Team Abu Dhabi in the Abu Dhabi T10. Now he is excited to lead the franchise overseas.
Raza told The National on Wednesday, “Being part of the technical staff with both Dubai Capitals and Team Abu Dhabi was very helpful. Now leading the team to the GSL is a bigger role and a great feeling. I appreciate the GMR Group trusting my ability and giving me the chance to lead in this new franchise tournament.”
The former left-arm spinner played for the UAE in 51 ODIs, 54 T20Is and 20 first-class games over 17 years. He values this global chance.
Raza added, “The Capitals franchise has a great history in cricket. Representing them as a head coach in a global tournament is rare for someone who grew up in the UAE. You probably haven’t seen a UAE-born coach go global before. I’m representing the Capitals and I’m representing our home brand. I am thankful for the opportunity to represent the country on the global stage.”
Raza has been scouting local talent for the Capitals. He helped recruit UAE internationals Rahul Chopra and Haider Ali.
Raza added, “Finding local talents was my main job for the Capitals. I have worked closely with Rahul and Haider. It’s nice to see them play international cricket and do well for the country.
