Aiden Markram made history on Friday at Lord’s as he scored his first century in an ICC final, helping South Africa chase down a tough 282 against Australia. He was not out on 102 after 159 balls, with 11 fours, and has South Africa just a few runs away from their first world title.
Markram’s century is special because he’s the first South African to score a hundred in an ICC final. This is his eighth Test century and he joins the likes of Gordon Greenidge and Don Bradman who have also scored fourth-inning centuries at Lord’s.
This is his third fourth-inning ton in Tests and he’s in some big company. Only Sunil Gavaskar and Graeme Smith have more in this category.
He also had an impact with the ball, taking two wickets in the match. With South Africa on 213/6 in 56 overs, the partnership between Markram and Temba Bavuma has been key. Bavuma was playing with a hamstring injury and still managed to score a half-century.

Earlier in the day, Markram and Wiaan Mulder had put South Africa in a good position by the end of the second session, with them on 94/2.
For Australia, Mitchell Starc played a good innings to help his team recover from a bad position and finish on 207 all out. This set up the Proteas to chase 282 and finally break their ICC title drought.
