The Bill is to encourage e-sports and online social games while preventing harmful online money gaming services, related ads and financial transactions. It will completely prohibit offering, running or supporting online money games whether based on skill, chance or both.
Through this law, the government wants to encourage e-sports and give them legal recognition, provide them legal backing. Sources said e-sports lacked legal backing.
The Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry will create a framework to promote e-sports which has been recognised as a competitive sport in India. The government will also promote online social games.
Government believes that banning online money gaming can prevent issues like addiction, financial losses and even suicides.
5000 crore industry
Industry estimates suggest that fantasy sports platforms spend over ₹5,000 crore on marketing every year. The new law will change this advertising landscape big time. With Asia Cup just around the corner, BCCI has limited time to find a new sponsor. But since it’s a big opportunity in Indian cricket, experts believe the BCCI will find a replacement easily.
Jersey sponsorship has long been a valuable but risky asset. Multiple past sponsors including Sahara and Byju’s faced regulatory or financial issues soon after signing the deal, a trend that industry insiders call the “jersey jinx”. Dream11 seems to be the latest victim of this jinx.
