The Test series between India and England, starting June 20 in Leeds, is now called the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. This has raised some eyebrows as since 2007, the series in England has been called the Pataudi Trophy, named after former Indian captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. This trophy was introduced to mark 75 years of India playing a Test against England. In India, the series is called the Anthony de Mello Trophy, named after a former BCCI president.
Fans and others in the cricket world have expressed their disappointment and the BCCI has got involved. Reports say they have asked the ECB to name one of the post-match awards after Pataudi so his legacy can be honoured. A BCCI official said since it’s the ECB’s series they get to decide the names but they have made a request regarding the award.

This isn’t the first time a series has been renamed. In 2020, the Wisden Trophy between England and West Indies was changed to the Richards-Botham Trophy to honour Viv Richards and Ian Botham. The Pataudi Trophy was introduced in 2007 to mark Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi’s contributions to Indian cricket. He captained India at 21 and played 46 Tests, scored 2793 runs, 6 centuries and 16 half-centuries, best score 203 not out. His dad Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi also had a cricket career, played for both England and India.
The series will also mark a new beginning for Indian Test cricket as Shubman Gill will be the captain after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirements.
