Recent reports suggest that Jasprit Bumrah may not participate in the Asia Cup 2025. This follows the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to allow him to leave the Indian team during their tour of England, where he sat out the final Test to avoid potential injury.
Bumrah has been under a lot of pressure lately. During the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series in England, he bowled almost 120 overs in just three Test matches, securing 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. Still, he appeared tired in the third Test and conceded over 100 runs in one innings, a first in his career.
Prior to the England tour, India’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, and new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, had stated that Bumrah would not play all five Tests to manage his fitness.
With the Asia Cup beginning on September 9 and a Test series against the West Indies shortly after, Bumrah is likely to miss the Asia Cup 2025. Selectors face a tough decision on whether to include him in the T20 tournament or rest him for more important Test matches with World Test Championship points at stake.
A BCCI source told PTI that it will be a tricky call, but Bumrah favors Test cricket, especially with World Test Championship points on the line. For T20s, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, as preparation for the T20 World Cup.

The official also hinted that Bumrah might focus on Test cricket and skip most ODIs leading up to the T20 World Cup in 2026, but he may return for T20I matches like the New Zealand series in January, which will serve as a warm-up for the World Cup.
This plan could also affect his availability for the South Africa Test series in November. Selectors Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will make the final decision based on Bumrah’s fitness and long-term plans.
India begins its Asia Cup campaign on September 10 against UAE, followed by a big match against Pakistan on September 14. The team is doing well, India is likely to advance far in the tournament. Given the upcoming Test matches, Bumrah’s participation in the Asia Cup seems questionable.
