Being the lively Aussie all-rounder that he is, Cameron Green was caught in an emotional moment. The rugged Green must have needed some reassurance that he was making the right decision for himself, thus receiving some very unexpected yet extremely welcome communication just days before his hard back surgery. That was when Bumrah, India’s fast bowler, keeping in touch with an old Mumbai Indians teammate during the Test series against New Zealand, reached out to him. Bumrah had undergone the same surgery 18 months earlier and returned stronger-the reassurance Green needed that he was surely making the right choice.
Bumrah’s recovery and his success as a bowler post-operation brought immense comfort to Green. That is really special. It makes you feel a lot better about it. I didn’t play with him in Mumbai but that was the connection we had. We spent some time together. To have someone like him reach out and see how well he did over the summer after his surgery gave me a lot of confidence,” Green said.
In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Green traced some of the bright spots in his injuries, maintaining that they have finally allowed him to focus exclusively on batting instead of having to think about bowling. I’ve got four back injuries; therefore, basically, I’ve got four chances to just be a batter. My batting has always been solid throughout those circumstances, so I’m not giving that up. However, it is nice to just focus on batting,” he said with a smile.
He looks calm and confident, apparently a reflection of his training sessions in London. Good form is a good sign, and Green’s especially good form with Gloucestershire ahead of the World Test Championship final points to that.
Reflecting upon his own recovery, Green said that the surgical techniques had improved with time compared to how his teammate Jason Behrendorff went through his surgery. I think the procedure has definitely changed since Jason had his. I’ve got three scars because they were able to avoid the muscle more. He had one scar and couldn’t move for about 7-8 weeks. He was a bit like ‘Stuff you’ Green joked.

Now that he is fit and rolling in training with Beau Webster, Green can hardly wait to get back on the field. Backing had been made easier because of a timely message from a world-class bowler who knew what he went through.
