Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori has brought his support behind Mohammed Shami while the latter has been facing challenges in the ongoing IPL season. Shami has so far managed to pick only six wickets in nine matches at a high economy rate of 11.23 in IPL 2025.
After SRH’s win over KKR, Vettori commented on Shami’s performance, saying that he had not played T20 cricket in quite a while and that it really takes some time to get back into the rhythm. According to him, the game has changed quite a bit from what it was 18 months ago when Shami last played for GT and was truly a star performer.
He has to get that consistent length again. Unfortunately, he’s just not been his best yet, but he can be once again after such a long hiatus. I know he’s been putting in the hard yards and wants it so badly, but this season, it’s just not worked for him yet. Yet, I’m sure he still will because he is a good bowler.

Shami was out of contention for the better part of 2023-24 due to an ankle injury. After recovery surgery in February 2024, he started to sustain pain in his right knee and has been getting treatment for that. He had returned and done well for Bengal last year in the Ranji Trophy, taking seven wickets against Madhya Pradesh.
There had been talks that he might feature in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, for which he never quite made it in time. This year, the 34-year-old has been getting the new ball for India across all formats and was instrumental in team India’s victorious champions trophy campaign.
