Making IPL history on a not-so-glorious note on Wednesday, Delhi Capitals exited after failing to make it to the playoffs, the first team to miss the playoffs after winning their first four games. They were knocked out from the tournament after losing to the Mumbai Indians by 59 runs. Chasing 181 runs, Delhi lost their way without Axar Patel, with only 121 runs on the board going into the penultimate over; Sameer Rizvi scored 39 runs for Delhi.
For the Mumbai side, Mitchell Santner stood out, picking three wickets for just 11 runs, while Jasprit Bumrah had a great run himself, claiming three wickets in 12 runs. This victory pushed Mumbai up to 16 points and fourth position, while Delhi languished at 13 points with one match to go, floor trading satisfaction for a miserable sell.
Delhi had started extremely well, winning their first four games, recording six wins from eight games and marking themselves up for likely playoff candidates. But those fortunes have changed at the other half with four losses and a no result, resulting in their ousting from the tournament. They also faced Mumbai for the 21st time in the IPL and have the worst record versus them amongst all teams.

Delhi’s stand-in captain, Faf du Plessis, said after the match, “It felt like a David versus Goliath situation. It’s great for the guys to come together as a team.” He also claimed Rizvi showed promise but admitted that an improvement was needed overall; they played well enough most of the time but didn’t do enough when it mattered most.
