After the thrilling third Test at Lord’s, the International Cricket Council (ICC) fined England for a slow over-rate. They were fined 10% of their match fees and lost 2 points from their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) tally.
Richie Richardson from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees made the decision. England were 2 overs behind the required pace even after considering time allowances.
According to the ICC Code of Conduct, players are fined 5% of their match fee for every over their team fails to bowl in time. Since England were 2 overs short, they got a 10% fine.
Additionally, under the WTC playing conditions, a team loses 1 WTC point for every over they are short. So England’s WTC points went from 24 to 22, and their points percentage from 66.67% to 61.11%. They dropped from 2nd to 3rd on the WTC table and Sri Lanka took over the 2nd spot.
The charge was laid by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, with Ahsan Raza as the 3rd umpire and Graham Lloyd as the 4th umpire.

This was a close Test match. Both teams scored the same in the first innings and England got a 192 run lead in the 2nd innings. India’s top-order struggled but Ravindra Jadeja and the lower-order almost turned the game around. But England kept their cool and won by 22 runs on the last day.
These celebrations were muted because of the fine which could have a big impact on England’s WTC campaign.
