It’s now formal: Faruque Ahmed is no longer the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Speaking for the Sports Ministry, the National Sports Council (NSC) announced Thursday the withdrawal of Faruque from any seat on the board of the BCB. Faruque losing the presidency was therefore a foregone conclusion with the NSC withdrawing his name, as it was the NSC that nominated him to the post some time ago after the prior president, Nazmul Hasan, was sacked last year.
The change followed a no-confidence vote, with eight BCB directors saying that they no longer support him and a special committee report on the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) bringing forth some allegations on his leadership. The NSC addressed a letter dated 29 May to the BCB CEO to formalize the eviction of Faruque, barely nine months into his presidency.

His resignation, though, was strongly resisted by Faruque himself. Now stepping forward to assist in overseeing a fair and transparent election scheduled for October is none other than ex-national captain Aminul Islam. Aminul is likely to take up the role of president but has gone on record to say that he is not interested in contesting the election. He stated, My goal is to hold a transparent election and create the best cricket board. That’s it. I’m not interested in running in the next election.

Aminul is an eminent personality of Bangladesh cricket, having captaincy to the national team in the 1999 World Cup and recording the country’s first Test century in 2000. Following his retirement from active cricket, he served as a coach and a match referee, and he is presently with the ICC (International Cricket Council) as a development officer. Upon request from the government, ICC agreed to give him leave of absence for this temporary position.
