The coach of the New Zealand cricket team is stepping down after a seven-year term that ended in October 2022. With him at the helm of the team, it recorded its first and only World Test Championship title, a record three finals in white-ball cricket, and the historic white-ball Test 3-0 series victory in India, the first of its kind for any visiting team against India in 12 years.
Stead had already stepped away from white-ball coaching duties and will not renew the contract for the Test side. New Zealand Cricket will be looking to employ one coach across all formats after his contract has expired.
Taking over in 2018 following the departure of Mike Hesson, Stead took the Kiwis through the 2019 World Cup final, narrowly losing by a boundary count; they won the first-ever World Test Championship in 2021 against India; reached the T20 World Cup final that year as well; and earlier this year, made it to the final of the Champions Trophy exultant of the Indian victory.

Regarding his tenure, he said, “I’ve had some incredible memories over these seven years with a group of talented people who consistently gave their best to the country, to each other, and for the fans. Brendon McCullum and Mike Hesson laid down a solid foundation that I was hoping to maintain so we could become more consistent. We’ve been able to hold our own in all formats, and I’d like to think opposition teams have that respect for us; that they know the Blackcaps don’t go down without a fight.”
