Indian cricket coach Gautam Gambhir shared his thoughts on the recent retirements of star batsman Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket. Both players announced their departures within a week, following a tough stretch in their Test careers. With a month left before India heads to England for a five-match Test series, Gambhir sees this as a chance for younger players to step up.
In an interview with CNN-News18, Gambhir expressed his belief that the younger crowd is ready to take on the challenge without Kohli and Sharma. He referenced the upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where star bowler Jasprit Bumrah was sidelined with an injury. He said, Sure, we’ll miss two senior players, but it opens the door for others to show they’re ready. It will be tough, but I know some players will rise to the occasion.
Gambhir also emphasized that retirement is a personal choice. He stated, “When you start and when you want to stop is entirely up to you. No one, whether it’s the coach or selectors, has the right to decide when someone should retire.”
