After India’s first win in Birmingham under Shubman Gill’s captaincy, Yograj Singh, a former Indian cricketer, feels Gautam Gambhir, the Indian team’s head coach, shouldn’t be criticized unfairly.
Gambhir was trolled, abused and even received death threats after the team’s performance in the first Test in Leeds and their recent long format record. Changes were made and they recovered in Birmingham, winning by a huge margin of 336 runs.
Yograj told ANI, You see Indian players are growing and playing well. Never abuse players with comments like, ‘remove him’ or ‘why was he chosen, he doesn’t deserve it’.
Yograj said former cricketers of his stature are giving back to the game and should be respected but not above constructive feedback.
He added, Nothing should be said negative about Gautam Gambhir. He’s doing a good job. Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid are the ones who are contributing to Indian cricket because cricket has given them a lot.
He also said, I think if we have everyone’s backing and still lose the series then at least acknowledge that the kids played well. It’s okay, wins and losses happen. We can’t tolerate defeat. There’s no need to explain if you win but if you lose you will be replaced. It’s a simple matter.
Yograj also praised Test captain Shubman Gill saying the team can still win the series. He was happy with the fielding compared to the first game.
He said, We have a way to go. I liked Shubman Gill’s statement that he will try to play this way. The team is playing well, everyone liked it a lot and we will win the series.

He added, God willing India will win the series under Shubman Gill’s captaincy. If we keep fielding like this—remember yesterday’s fielding fitness, the catches we took and if the bowlers bowl four good balls out of six, then take two catches.
The Indian team will now have a short break before they gear up for the Lord’s Test which starts on Thursday, July 10.
