It has been said that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli wished to continue playing Test cricket while India’s coach, Gautam Gambhir, is looking to give opportunity to new youngsters in this World Test Championship cycle, the BCCI and Ajit Agarkar being fully behind him.
After the sizable loss to Australia, which ended they in the chance of reaching the WTC final, the future of Rohit and Kohli seemed decided. Hindustan Times said Gambhir is not in favor of the star culture existing in the team and is looking for fresh players for the England tour.
A source said, “Gautam Gambhir’s times start today. He made it clear that for the next WTC cycle, India need new faces. Everybody concerned knows where he stands on the retention of senior players for Test matches.” So while Gambhir wants them to be replaced by youngsters, it seems Rohit and Kohli are not planning retirement just yet.
Rohit himself has recently taken to Michael Clarke’s podcast to talk about how excited he is for the England series, confirming he is ready for it. Meanwhile, the Delhi Ranji coach has said that Virat told him he is looking forward to scoring some hundreds on that tour, which makes it clear that these two veterans are stepping aside mainly because the board and the management want to usher in new talent.
