In August 2024, English cricket lost Graham Thorpe, a former cricketer, in an accident. Almost a year on, his wife has spoken out about his death.
An inquest at Surrey Coroner’s Court heard that his death followed a long battle with mental health. Amanda Thorpe, his wife, said he had suicidal thoughts before he died.
Last August, English cricket said goodbye to Graham Thorpe, who played for England and Surrey. He died after being hit by a train at Esher Railway Station. The Surrey Coroner’s Court inquest was big news after his death.
The court said Thorpe was diagnosed with anxiety and depression in 2018. He tried to take his life in 2022. That shows how bad it was.
His wife has spoken more about his final days. According to The Times, she said: “In the weeks before he died he told me he didn’t want to be here and asked me to help him end his life, wanting to go to Switzerland.”

The 2022 Ashes series was tough for the England cricket team, Australia won 4-0. It was a tough time for Thorpe too. He lost his job as coach after a video of him smoking a cigar indoors during the tour surfaced. His wife said things might have been different if he hadn’t been on that tour.
“He came back from Australia in a bad state. Being sacked after that was very hard for him. If he hadn’t been on that tour he wouldn’t have been sacked and that was the main thing he couldn’t cope with,” she added.
Graham Thorpe played 100 Tests for England, scoring 6744 runs with 16 centuries. 82 ODIs, 2380 runs. He will be remembered at The Oval on August 1, his 56th birthday, during the fifth Test against India.
