West Indies all-rounder Hayley Matthews, the number one T20I and number two ODI player in the world, is going to have shoulder surgery. At 27 she’s already scored 5902 runs and 12 centuries in white ball cricket and 236 wickets. The ICC says she’ll need some time off to recover after injuring her shoulder in the first ODI of their tour of England.
Matthews did play in the home ODI series against South Africa where she scored 104 and took 4 wickets but since the West Indies won’t be in the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup she’s decided to get the surgery now to come back strong in 2026.

Unfortunately this means she’ll also miss the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia where she was signed by the Melbourne Renegades for her 4th season. The Renegades General Manager James Rosengarten said he was disappointed but acknowledged her importance to the team on and off the field. Hayley loves this club and we share in her disappointment at not being available for this year’s tournament, he said.
