The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is a true carnival of cricket. Why is that?
By the way, the players both local and foreign offer nothing but amazing performances throughout the tournament. And this happens even though they are all playing in accordance with the restrictions that have been placed on the squads.
How Many Players are There in CPL?
The squad limit for Every CPL team is seventeen players. These local, newcomers and foreign players are all included in this number.
The CPL franchises consist of a maximum of five overseas players who can be included in the overall squad. The remaining twelve positions can be filled with a combination of local and up-and-coming West Indies players.
Player selection for each team is conducted through the draft. They may also pre-sign players, be it local or overseas, even before the main draft.
But what is the maximum number of overseas players that a CPL team can have in the playing XI?
The CPL adheres to the conventional overseas player’s rule. The most foreign players a team can have in the XI is four.
However, the limitation could also reach five. How so?
Actually, it is quite straightforward. The teams must include one player from the West Indies Breakout League in their XI.
So don’t be shocked if five foreign cricketers are seen playing at the same time. It just means that the team has one player from the Breakout League on the roster.
What exactly is the Breakout League?
A developmental tournament is how you could envision it. The Breakout League was launched by Cricket West Indies (CWI) in April 2025.
Through this league, CWI’s objective is to discover and groom young players in the Caribbean islands. However, it is only for players who have little experience.
The board has specified an age limit of 30 or below, along with less than 40 T20 caps and less than 10 T20I appearances. These kinds of players will constitute the six teams in the Breakout League, which are linked to the various CPL franchises.
Now, if the CPL team sees a player with a potential, they can take him/her to the next level in the CPL. Thus, it’s a win-win situation for both franchises and players.
