With the 2025 IPL season indeed slated to begin on the 17th of May, the attention of all is drawn to it; the BCCI has also declared an India A squad to play England Lions. The team is to be captained by Abhimanyu Easwaran and includes some very talented Indian cricketers. They are scheduled to play two matches, the first on May 30 and the second on June 6.
Gaurav Gupta informed TOI that Hrishikesh Kanitkar will serve as the head coach for India A throughout their tour of England. Kanitkar, a seasoned cricketer from Maharashtra, has represented India in two Tests and 34 ODIs, his coaching background considered sound. He recently coached the Indian Women’s team that won the Gold Medal at the 2022 Asian Games. He was also slated to work as assistant coach for Kochi Tuskers Kerala back in 2011 but walked out before the season began. Kanitkar had also coached Goa and Tamil Nadu at the state level.

Kanitkar was a left-handed middle-order batsman who also bowled off-spin. He is especially remembered for that boundary against Pakistan which clinched the Independence Cup in 1998. He had a stellar domestic cricket career, amassing over 10,400 runs at an average of 52, including 33 centuries. Having captained a Ranji Trophy-winning side, the BCCI feels that he is best suited to lead this talented India A side on their tough assignment.
Meanwhile, the head coach of the senior team, Gautam Gambhir, will probably travel with the senior team to England. India A shall have one more game after the two matches against England Lions.
