The former captain of India, Rohit Sharma, made his way into the documentation of history on Wednesday (October 29) by being the oldest Indian player to attain the world’s number one ODI batter position. The cricketer from Mumbai, aged 38 years and 182 days, climbed up two rungs on Wednesday to grab the number one spot in ICC ODI batter ranking for the very first time in his career. Rohit pushed India’s captain, Shubman Gill, to second place taking his position at the top.
Last week, during his account of 745, Rohit scored 73 off 97 balls in the 2nd ODI India- Australia at Auckland on October 23 and also scored an unbeaten 121 off 125 balls at the 3rd match held at Sydney ground on October 25. These two impressive innings not only put Rohit in the top position of the ODI batter’s ratings but also contributed to him getting additional rating points (781 now).
ICC ODI batter’s Rankings
Rohit, who took India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, is the fifth Indian after the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Gill who have the privilege of being world number one ODI batters
Gill has fallen from the first to the third position now. He could only make scores of 10, 9, and 24 in the three ODIs against Australia.
Batting sensation Virat Kohli scored the highest of 74 runs in third ODI but still finds himself dropping one spot. He is now in the sixth position with 725 rating points to his credit.
In the second ODI that was held at Adelaide, Shreyas Iyer was the Indian batter who scored fifty, and he is improving his position by one (from 10th to 9th).
In the ICC ODI bowler’s rankings, Josh Hazlewood ascended two spots to the 8th position and India’s Kuldeep Yadav has been relegated from 6th to 7th position.
Adam Zampa, the spinner, took four wickets in the second ODI match between India and Australia, and he has also risen by two spots (now 12th), while New Zealand’s white-ball captain Mitchell Santner has surged three spots to the fourth position in the ICC ODI bowler’s rankings.
