The International League T20 (ILT20) is mixing things up for next season with a new rule about who can play. They’re focusing on getting more players from non-cricket powerhouses involved.
So each team in the league needs to have at least 8 players from Associate nations. The breakdown is:
- At least 4 players from United Arab Emirates (UAE).
- 1 player from Kuwait.
- 1 player from Saudi Arabia.
- 2 players from other Associate Member countries.
With 6 teams in the ILT20, that means we’ll see at least 48 players from these Associate nations in the 2025 season. That’s a record for a major league!

The idea is to help grow cricket in these regions and give new players a chance to shine. It also makes the ILT20 different from other leagues because it’s opening doors for these up and coming cricket nations. By having Kuwait and Saudi Arabia represented, the league is helping to grow cricket in the Gulf region and other places where it’s not as well known.
Players and experts are happy about this change. They think it’s good to see a league that’s not just about the big cricket countries. For players from Associate nations, this is a big opportunity. It’s a chance to play at a high level, get noticed and maybe even get contracts with other big leagues down the line.
Now the teams will have to look harder to find talent in new places. They’ll have to go beyond the usual markets and invest in developing cricket at the local level. This could mean they find some really talented players who would have been missed otherwise.
So with this move the ILT20 isn’t just getting more players involved. It’s creating its own identity as a league that values inclusivity, growth and helping cricket develop around the world for the long term. The ILT20 is setting itself apart as a league that is committed to global cricket development. This puts it as a forward thinking organisation that is expanding the game and providing opportunities for players.
