Ex-captain Sunil Gavaskar has called upon the BCCI to tone down celebrations when the IPL resumes on May 17, calling it a mark of respect for the victims of the recent terror attack at Pahalgam and growing tensions between India and Pakistan. The season had been suspended amid concerns over security, especially with the drone attacks from Pakistan. There was even a call for an end to a game between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals after just 10 overs, following security concerns that led to the foreign players feeling uneasy.
The BCCI is now ready to restart the season, which will continue up until June 3, since a ceasefire has been promulgated and things seem calm. “I do hope that with what has occurred, there will be something subdued,” said Gavaskar to Sports Today.
“I would have hoped that, given what has happened and the families who have lost loved ones, we tone down the celebrations. Let’s just play the game. The crowds can come; just no music, no DJs during the match. No dancing or anything like that-just cricket. It would be a nice gesture for the families.”

The killing of 26 innocent tourists in the Pahalgam attack forced the cessation of music, dance, and ambiance, while a match between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad saw players wear black armbands and observe a minute’s silence. Though India retaliated by resorting to terror sites through Operation Sindoor in Pakistan, cross-border shelling further caused casualties.
The first match back will have Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 17 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
