James Anderson, 42, is to captain Lancashire for the next two County Championship matches while Marcus Harris is away for the birth of his second child. Anderson, who has 1,131 first-class wickets, starts his brief captaincy against Kent on June 22. He’s the third captain this season after Keaton Jennings and Harris.
Lancashire have not won any of their seven matches so far, five draws and two losses. They have seven games left and need to start winning to get up the table. Anderson missed the first six matches with a calf injury but returned strongly, taking four wickets in his only match this season.
He’s also been doing well in the T20 format, 10 wickets in four games. He’ll need to bring all his experience to get the team back on track.

Stephen Croft, Lancashire’s interim head coach, told BBC: “Having James as captain brings a new dynamic to the team. It’s only his second time as captain but it’s a big moment for him and the team. I think he’s got a lot to give on and off the pitch. After Kent he’ll face Derbyshire and have Ashton Turner and Chris Green available while Harris is away. So it’s a new chapter for him and we hope for the team.”
