While celebrating yet another record-breaking performance in an already distinguished career that essentially won England an ODI series against the West Indies, Root declared that he still does have a lot to give for the game.
At the beginning of the Cardiff game on Sunday, England was struggling 2-2 in the chase for 309 runs and had even found itself in a dreadful position of 133-5. But alongside Root’s incredible innings of 166 not out 139-ball, England had reached the fateful target with a 3-wicket victory and had also taken a 2-0 lead with one more game remaining at The Oval on Tuesday.

In this innings, Root also joined the record books as England’s leading run-scorer in ODI matches, surpassing the former captain Eoin Morgan. “I suppose the old man tag comes with having played that many matches,” the 34-year-old said after becoming a member of the 7,000 ODI run club. He was also England’s leading run-scorer in Tests, but he stressed that he still wanted to score more runs.

“I want to do as much for England as I can,” said Root. “I feel like there are still more runs in me, and this example is proof of that.” He said that this drive to get better and win for his team will keep him playing. “Right now, it feels like I’m just getting started, and I will continue to do my bit to win games and series for now.
