Former England captain Jos Buttler believes Shubman Gill will bring a mix of Virat Kohli’s energy and Rohit Sharma’s calm to the Indian Test team. Buttler, who played with Gill for the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, calls him an “impressive young man” with a lot of competitive spirit.
Talking to Stuart Broad on For the Love of Cricket, Buttler said, “He’s a really good player. He’s calm when he speaks but shows a lot of passion on the field. I think he’ll balance Kohli’s aggression and Rohit’s laid back style.”

Buttler acknowledged the challenges Gill will face as a captain. He said Gill is trying to keep his batting and captaincy separate but will need support to manage that.
“It’s hard to really understand how much attention these players get,” Buttler said. “You see it during the IPL but experiencing it yourself is different. The Indian Test captain is one of the most powerful people in the country, so he’s really up there.”

He added, “It’s a big responsibility. Shubman has led in two IPL seasons which is tough and now he’s following legends like Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar at No. 4. That’s a big ask.”
