Kapil Dev believes Shubman Gill will be a good Test captain as the 25-year-old starts his new journey on Friday at Headingley, Leeds. For Gill, this is the beginning of something new. He’ll be leading India into a new phase of Test cricket after the retirements of Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Kapil was quoted by Times of India, “Achha aur talented baccha hai,” which means he’s a good and talented boy—and now he’s the captain of the Indian team. He’s also confident that Gill will win the five-match Test series and bring back the trophy. “I’m sure he will return with the trophy in hand. We feel proud and wish them all the luck. I hope they come back victorious and play to their full potential,” said the 66-year-old.

India last won a Test series in England in 2007 under Rahul Dravid. They had won earlier in 1971 under Ajit Wadekar and in 1986 under Kapil Dev himself. With the recent retirements, the Indian team has new faces like Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Dhruv Jurel and they’ve even brought back Karun Nair who hasn’t played for India in nearly eight years.
Senior players like Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and vice-captain Rishabh Pant form the core of the team. Though they lack experience—Gill has played only 32 Tests—Kapil Dev asked people not to call them inexperienced.

He said, “Today they may be inexperienced, but tomorrow they’ll be experienced. I have confidence in this bunch of players. They will do something special. I just want to say—go out there and play. That’s it. Enjoy yourselves; that’s all I want to say to this Indian side.”
