Shubman Gill has a tough job ahead as he leads the Indian Test team without the experience of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma on their tour of England starting June 20. He was named captain earlier this month after Rohit announced his retirement, making him the fifth youngest Indian to take on this role. Gill beat out players like Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant for the captaincy, which has raised some eyebrows, especially since he hasn’t fully proven himself as a top Test batter yet. His average stands at 35.05 over 32 Tests, and in three Tests in England, he only scored 88 runs across six innings.
Despite these challenges, World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev believes it’s important to stay positive. He thinks this is a good opportunity for Gill, regardless of his past performance. This is a new assignment, and I only see the positive side of it. It’s about potential, and I’m confident he will do well, Kapil told Sportstar.
Gill has never captained a Test side before, but Kapil thinks he’ll pick up the skills along the way. It won’t be easy in England or Australia, but someone has to step up. Gill is the right person for this role. The selectors made this choice with a purpose and a long-term vision. He’ll need support from his team and fans. He’s young, and he’ll figure out how to bring out the best in everyone, he said.

The team has a few new faces like Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh, while Shardul Thakur and Karun Nair have returned after solid performances in domestic cricket. Kapil mentioned, It’s good that expectations are not too high since the team is young. Sometimes being the underdog helps you perform better. I see Gill as someone ready to take on the world. With support from Bumrah, he can really grow as a captain.

However, Kapil also warned that Gill can’t take it easy in England. He’ll learn to handle responsibility; having good form with the bat will help him a lot. I’m happy for Gill because he seems like a solid batsman. He should remember not to relax while playing in England, he added.
