Kevin Pietersen was getting frustrated as he was commentating on Marnus Labuschagne’s batting on the first day of the World Test Championship final. Labuschagne batted at the top of the order for this game and didn’t look very aggressive in the first part of the innings which was tough for Australia since they lost two wickets quickly.
When Steve Smith came in he started scoring runs fast, 17 off 28 balls. Meanwhile Labuschagne was stuck on 17 off 49 balls and eventually got out after 56 balls. Pietersen from the commentary box was critical of Labuschagne’s approach. He said Marnus has the talent to hit well but his mindset is holding him back.

Pietersen said, You see Marnus leaving a lot of balls… Steve Smith won’t let you do that and that’s why he’s one of the greats. He said it was frustrating to see Labuschagne not taking more chances. He can play well if he commits to it, he said, Labuschagne needs to shift his thinking. He said batters should focus on scoring runs and leaving the ball all the time makes them easy targets for bowlers. If you’re only looking to leave the ball, bowlers can exploit that. Look at someone like Steve Smith – if you make a mistake he’ll punish you. In the end Australia scored 212.
