Dilip Vengsarkar shared his shock at the sudden retirement of Kohli and Rohit from Test cricket. Remembered for his commitment in 1983, he however thought that the two cricketers would presumably keep seeing through the forthcoming five-match series in England. He considered them a “big loss” for the Indian team because of what they have given to Indian cricket.
Vengsarkar remarked, “Both are excellent players, and they’ve done a lot for Indian cricket. I was shocked since there’s an important tour coming up. I thought they would announce their retirements after that, but they chose to do it beforehand. It’s their decision, though.” Vengsarkar proceeded to say that both have had good outings in England in the past, and the Indian team was going to feel the pain of their absence.

On a positive note, he believed, the two’s retirement might present chances for youngsters to go further. He said, “They’ve been around for a while and have always done well in England, so losing them is tough. But there are other talented players from the India A team and first-class cricket who can step up and show what they can do.”
Kohli and Sharma eventually retired after going through a rough patch in their Test careers. They had also retired from T20Is last June, after their triumphant campaign together at the 2025 T20 World Cup. India’s Test series in England is about to begin next month, with the first Test commencing at Headingley in Leeds, June 20.
