The time has come to seriously think about who Shubman Gill should be named the Test captain of India, says the former Indian cricketer and BCCI selector Kris Srikkanth. When Rohit Sharma stepped away from Tests, there had already been talk of Gill taking over as captain. Srikkanth is perplexed by the very suggestion since he believes that Gill still isn’t a Test regular and that having the additional pressure of being captain should not be on his shoulders yet.
He suggested the BCCI entertain the name of Jasprit Bumrah as captain, but if he is unable to play, then one of KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant should take on that mantle. Srikkanth said, “Gill isn’t even a sure thing in Test cricket. The captaincy should go to Bumrah, and if he is out, it should be Rahul or Pant.”
It’s been difficult for India to find a new number four since Virat Kohli has retired. Gill can go down the order, but KL Rahul is the man, says Srikkanth. “For me, KL Rahul should be the one at No. 4. He can be key for India going forward in Tests. He has the right skills, and the management should give him that role.”

The BCCI selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar is expected to announce the new Test captain, probably on May 23, when they may also crow about the squad for the upcoming Tests against England.
