This match was very important for Gujarat Titans, and MI lost a close rain-or-shine; in rain interruption, Gujarat chased down 147 runs in 19 overs, losing 7 wickets. With seven teams still in contention for the playoff spots, it is gathering expectations that 16 points might not suffice for a top-four finish this year. Mumbai currently stands with 14 points from 12 games and has every reason to believe that it must win its last two matches for the playoffs.
After the game, Jayawardene stated that “every game from now will be treated like a playoff as we try to continue our strong performances in the second half of the tournament.” Despite a rough start, where they lost 4 out of the first 5 matches, the MI squad showed real fighting spirit to win six games in a row until it ended on Tuesday.

Jayawardene observed that the two teams made plenty of mistakes, but MI possibly more. I feel that we didn’t play to our potential, especially with the bat. We looked good early on but didn’t make the most of the last eight overs. Probably 30 runs short, I would give credit to the bowlers who created opportunities for us. And I’m proud of how the guys battled in adverse situations.
Looking ahead, the Mumbai Indians have the Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals for their last two encounters. They would be looking towards their star players Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah to help them claim a spot in the top four.
