Completing his career as an international cricketer, 39-year-old Bangladesh veteran all-rounder Mahmudullah retired from ODI cricket on Wednesday. By 2024 he had already left Tests in 2021 and T20Is.
Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah batted 239 times in one day matches, averaging 36.46 with a top of 128* opposite New Zealand at the 2015 World Cup. A middle- to lower-middle-order batsman, he has hit four centuries and 32 half-centuries in the format. With three of the tons coming in World Cups, he is the sole Bangladeshi carrying the honor.
Retiring as the fourth-highest run-scorer in the country, he will be remembered above all for his ability to be the Tigers’ last line of defense. In addition, he got 82 one-day international wickets of part-time off-spin.
Mahmudullah posted the statement on his official Facebook page: “All praises only for the Almighty Allah,.” I shall be retiring from international cricket. Many thanks to my fans—who have constantly supported me—my coaches and all of my team mates. He said, “My parents, my father-in-law in particular, and most crucially my brother Emdad Ullah who has been there for me always since my childhood as my coach and mentor, are all much appreciated.
Finally, thanks to my children and wife; they have been my support network throughout good times and bad. Raeid will miss me in red and green jersey, I am aware. You say yes and keep going, even if not everything ends neatly. Alhamdulillah peace. Best of luck to my team and Bangladesh cricket.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said he had chosen not to be up for the central contracts, so his retirement appeared imminent. His performance in the winless 2025 Champions Trophy in Bangladesh had media attention on his team’s ranking.
Bangladesh were beaten by New Zealand and India, with their final game against Pakistan being called off owing to rain.
After another seasoned team-mate and brother-in-law, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah announces his ODI career ends just over a week away.
For Bangladesh, Mahmudullah notched 2914 runs in fifty Tests and 2444 runs in 141 T20Is. He played his final Test in Harare in 2021 against Zimbabwe and his last T20I was in Hyderabad in 2024 against India.
