Moeen Ali shared with us some of his rather harrowing experiences during the India-Pakistan conflict that suspended the IPL 2025 season. He said his parents were in PoK, just an hour’s drive away from where Indian missiles landed during Operation Sindoor. Having family ties in Pakistan itself, after having departed for Pakistan during the conflict, Moeen was reluctant to come back to the resumed IPL.
He has said that his family escaped with just moments to spare. The operation by the Indian Army came after a terrorist attack at Pahalgam, Kashmir, in which 26 innocent civilians were killed, and Indian missiles then targeted terrorist camps in PoK. Moeen said, “My parents were in Kashmir at the time…in Pakistan, only about an hour away from where the strikes happened. They managed to get the only flights out that day. I was relieved they got out, but it was hectic.”
Moeen was in India at the time, playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders along with his family, when he decided to depart prior to the official suspension of the IPL. He remembers, “Things escalated quickly, and suddenly it felt like we were in a war zone. We didn’t hear anything about the missiles, but it became urgent to leave and ensure my family was safe.”

The matter of praise from Moeen on the support extended by the IPL organizers and KKR was that, “They took care of us well. They said, ‘We’ll help in any way we can.’ Being of Pakistani descent and in India during such times was tough. I truly feel these are the same people on both sides, just divided by borders.” Though the IPL 2025 season is underway, several foreign players like Moeen have opted to miss it due to travel concerns and national duties.
