Mahendra Singh Dhoni, known as Captain Cool for his calm leadership, has applied to trademark the name.
The application filed online on June 5 means Dhoni wants to own the name that fans and the cricket world uses for him.
Captain Cool isn’t just a nickname anymore. It now stands for Dhoni’s ability to stay calm under pressure, like when he led India to win the T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2017.
Famous people trademark names or words to build their brands. Cristiano Ronaldo uses “CR7” for his business and Michael Jordan used the Jumpman logo to promote his ‘Air Jordan’ brand. Virat Kohli uses ‘one8’ in his businesses which range from clothing to restaurants.
Even after retiring from international cricket, Dhoni is still a big name. He still plays for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has led CSK to win the IPL five times.
After CSK’s last league match in IPL 2025, Dhoni made fans wonder about his future.

“I have 4-5 months to decide. There’s no rush. Every year it takes about 15% more work to stay fit. You have to be at your best, because this is top level cricket. It’s professional. You can’t always depend on performance. If cricketers retired just because of performance, some would retire at 22. What you need to see is how hungry you are, how fit you are and how much you can help the team. You need to see if the team needs you. I have enough time to decide, Dhoni said.”
